The Daily Echo newspaper from Hampshire has recently started a campaign to build a Spitfire memorial in the city of Southampton. The memorial, it is proposed, would be an attractive and worthy symbol in the city which was the home of Supermarine works and thus is intimately connected with the history of Mitchell’s fighter.
Here are some of the Echo’s articles issued as part of the campaign
- Give us the Spitfire to help the city lift off!
- Grand designs for city’s defining landmarks
- Leisure chief backs the Spitfire initiative
The Southamption Spitfire memorial is an worthy cause, especially when one considers the competing proposals for a new landmark in the city centre: the laser-beam illumination of the clock tower or a scale model of the city to be placed at the Art Gallery.
