Check this brilliant video showing a pair of de Havilland Mosquitos and Supermarine Spitfires in flight. If you consider the Spitfire to look stylish in the air, I’d say that this movie clip proves that the Mosquito was a very close contender indeed.
And before you ask about where these images were taken: this film is computer-generated. And yes, I found it hard to believe, too. It is done so well that there aren’t any obvious give aways; maybe only that the Mossies move just a bit too steady through the air when zooming the field at low level, but that’s just nit-picking. If you watched Flyboys or Pearl Harbor recently (just for the aerial sequences, not for the story), you should know how hard it is to make computer-generated aircraft to look and move so real.
Personally I’m convinced that a remake of The Battle Of Britain with these computer effects will occur, it is just a question of time. It would be more difficult to replace Laurence Olivier in the role of Dowding.
