Comissioned by Rolls Royce for installation outside their new factory in Bristol is this sculpture by Bridget McCrum. Over 4 meters high, the original piece is currently (January 2008) waiting to be cast in stainless steel, but the artist produced also a series of 12 smaller maquettes in bronze.

According to the information from the artist, the proportions of the work are based on the Merlin bird and the shape of the wings reflect those of the Spitfire aircraft. An accomplished sculptor, McCrum works with lyrical abstractions of living forms, a process after which only the primary elements of her animals and birds remain identifiable. She works primarily in stone and bronze. The steel Merlin is her largest creation ever.
