Anatomy of the Spitfire Cockpit

The reflector gunsight of the Spitfire Mk. V was of the same type that was used onboard RAF fighters for the larger part of the war and was only superseded by the Mark II gyro gunsight in 1944.

The calibration ring at the base of the device could be set for range by dialling in the wingspan of the target aircraft. This in turn adjusted the diameter of the sighting ring projected onto the glass display so that the pilot could better judge the distance to its target.
