Breaking news: the Australian Sydney Morning Herald just reported that a replica Spitfire crashed near Gympie in Central Queensland, Australia.  Tragically, it is another fatality of this flying season; the pilot has reportedly been killed in the accident.

The aircraft was a 75% scale replica of a Spitfire. It apparently spun down during a landing approach to the Gympie aerodrome.

The plane came down in a paddock off Lagoon Pocket Road, about 10 kilometres south of Gympie, just before 4pm local time. An eye witness reported that the aircraft  came down to a hard belly landing, breaking up upon impact.

Update:  The first photos from the crash site have now appeared in the Australian press:

Can any of our readers help identifying the aircraft? Would you please add a comment to this article and share.
