Here is a video showing how the sound of a Spitfire Mk. IX is recorded for the benefit of a new computer game. The aircraft is the famous MH434 at Duxford in England. The sound of the Rolls Royce V12 Merlin engine, which is put through its typical modes of operation, is well presented in this video.

The clip has been produced by Pole Position Production, a Swedish company involved in the development of the game. [kkinte]

Thank you, this was wonderful to hear. The only engine in the world that makes this woman actually cry. Why so? I don’t know!

Any chance that this could be posted audio only?

The magic of the Merlin is to hear it before you see the aircraft. That unmistaken sound.

If there was ever the voice of an Angel, let it be the sound like a Rolls Royce Merlin.
