Here is a diorama I put together to depict a scramble. The Spitfire is the latest Airfix Mk. I in 1/48th scale, depicting No 19 Squadron at Duxford. The figures are from Eduard and ICM.

A lovely kit to build and makes a nice Spitfire Mk. I – albeit with incorrect wheels.

Very nice!!

Early 19 Sqn? Is that Bob Tuck’s aircraft? Is that some kind of horn balance on the rudder?

Nice kit that, but feel somehow Airfix could have done better, (their MkV for example). On this, I feel the shape of the vertical fin, particularly the trailing edge of the rudder, is not quite right? Unless it was slightly different on very early aircraft?

Hi James,
Yes very early MK1 of 19 Squadron so not even bubble canopy.Sorry-I don’t know who the pilot was.The very early Spits had the bit of bracketry on the tailfin-seen on a few photos, but I’m not sure why,but it makes it look a bit different.

K9795 lasted well, it fought in the BoB and eventually became instructional airframe 4867M in 1942. The device on the rudder is a guard for the anti-spin parachute fitted to early Spitfires.

Nice job. I’m just building that kit now. Almost done the cockpit. Great kit. Nice to see Airfix back in the lead.
