Opening the canopy reveals another crucial difference from the “standard” unpressurised Spitfire. The sliding, double-glazed hood is all-plastic and is not supported by the usual metal framing: note its bare front and rear edges!

The use of double-glazed hood was essential on pressurised aircraft to prevent the transparencies from freezing at high altitude.
