A distinctive feature of all photo-reconnaissance Spitfires was their camera equipment. The Spitfire PR Mk. XIX carried its cameras in the fuselage compartment behind the cockpit.

The location of one camera, the oblique one looking through a circular window in the port side of the fuselage, is immediately evident when the aircraft is on the ground. The other two camera openings were facing straight down, and their apertures are much harder to find unless you know where to look…

Contrary to the common misconception, the Spitfire could carry only two cameras on each mission – either the two verticals or the oblique one, but not all three simultaneously.
