This little flap located close to the wing leading edge covered the landing flap actuator. When flaps were deployed, the flap actuator pushed up the spring-loaded door. This had an added value of providing a visual indicator to the pilot that the flaps were lowered – another example of the quality engineering of the 1930s, which could do the job though simple mechanics, without resorting to a mass of electrical wiring!
