The horizontal tail and the elevator were identical to those employed in the earlier Spitfire marks.

A notable detail is the enlarged elevator horn balance, first introduced on the Spitfire Mk. IX. This type of horn balance addressed certain
longitudinal stability issues found on the Mk. V. It also allowed for a wider span of CG travel, which was essential if heavy equipment – such as rear fuselage tank or cameras, as in this aircraft – were to be carried in the fuselage behind the pilot.
