A Spitfire Mk. IX RK853 photographed touching down at Schijndel (B.85), Holland.
This was a personal aircraft of Wing Commander R W F “Sammy” Sampson, leader of No. 145 (Free French) Wing RAF. The small letters ‘SS’ painted on the fuselage are Sampsons initials (sometimes causing this aircraft to be wrongly attributed to Polish Wing Commander Stan Skalski).
Wing Commander “Sammy” Sampson was a Scottish pilot and a veteran of the Battle of Britain.
