Anatomy of the Spitfire Cockpit
This is the remote contactor box for the IFF transmitter. The unit transmitted a signal for 15 seconds out of every minute thus identifying the aircraft as friendly to the radar operators below. To the left of the unit is the starboard side cockpit illumination lamp.
