Anatomy of the Spitfire Cockpit

Lower part of the sliding hood. The straight bar in this view is part of the emergency canopy release system. Spring-loaded in the locked position, the bar held the hood attached to its runners. By pulling the bar forward the hood could be unhooked from the runners and lifted off - either from the inside by the pilot by means of an emergency handle, or from the outside in case of the forced landing.
